The Woman Behind Finding Feathers
I did not arrive at this work because I had everything figured out. I arrived here through living, surviving, healing, remembering and continuing to choose the light.
Hello, I’m Crystal Dunbar. My spirit name is White Buffalo Medicine Woman, and I’m the woman behind Finding Feathers.
Finding Feathers is an expression of the path I have walked, the connection I have carried since childhood and the work that continues to move through me. To understand this work, I believe it is important to know something about the human being behind it.
My Path Began Long Before Finding Feathers Had a Name
Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I lived through physical, mental, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as domestic violence. I also grew up in environments deeply affected by drug and alcohol addiction. Those addictions were not my own, but their presence contributed to much of the instability surrounding me.
In adulthood, I continued to experience physical and mental abuse, manipulation and control across different kinds of relationships. Those relationships and circumstances are no longer part of my life. Today, my life is rooted in far greater safety, and I continue learning what trust, healthy boundaries and mutual respect can feel like.
I do not share this because I want what happened to me to define who I am. I share it because these experiences have shaped my understanding of safety, consent, trust, healing and the importance of being met without shame or judgment.
Safety was not something I knew in my everyday life. The only places where I truly experienced safety were with animals and in nature.
They were where I experienced unconditional love, acceptance and dependable support. With them, I did not need to manage anyone's emotions, make myself smaller or become someone else. I could simply be.
Animals and nature were more than an escape from what was happening around me. They were my refuge, my companions and my earliest experience of a connection that felt steady, honest and sacred. They remain an essential part of my life, my healing and the work that moves through me today.
A Connection I Have Carried Since Childhood
My connection with animals, nature and Spirit also began when I was very young.
I communicated with animals. I received messages and inner knowing that I could not always explain. I experienced the presence of Spirit, ancestors, guardians and Divine energies, along with moments I could only understand as miracles.
People and animals found their way to me too.
Even as a child, adults and strangers would unexpectedly share their stories, worries and burdens with me. I often knew what to say, what to notice or simply how to be present. For a long time, I did not realize that everyone did not naturally experience the world this way. It was simply how I moved through it.
I do not believe these connections make me better, more evolved or more important than anyone else. We are equal beings with different experiences, abilities, perspectives and blind spots. I believe each of us carries intuition, wisdom and a relationship with the Divine, however we understand or name it.
Healing While Still Surviving
For much of my life, survival and healing existed side by side.
I did not wait until every part of my life was safe, settled or resolved before I began healing. Healing happened in pieces: through small moments of awareness, through animals and nature, through recognizing patterns, establishing boundaries, questioning what I had been taught and gradually learning to trust myself.
That healing has never been perfectly linear.
I still become triggered. I sometimes repeat patterns or revisit lessons I thought I had completed. I take breaks. I move forward, step backward and begin again. I am still learning, growing and discovering who I am beneath what happened to me and what I was taught I needed to be.
I do not present myself as someone who has arrived or someone who holds every answer. I do not excuse or minimize what I experienced, but I can honour what I have chosen to create from it. Again and again, I continue to choose compassion, connection, truth and light.
How Finding Feathers Emerged
My life has never fit neatly into one box.
I have worked in corporate and legal environments while quietly continuing the work that had followed me throughout my life. People and animals kept finding their way to me, often unexpectedly, and I repeatedly found myself placed where support, guidance or healing was needed.
Eventually, I began to recognize the pattern.
Finding Feathers was not created around one modality or technique. It grew from a lifetime of listening, noticing, receiving and allowing Creator to work through me in whatever way serves the being in front of me.
Sometimes that comes through energy. Sometimes through words, questions, sound, movement, animals, nature, mediumship, shamanic work or quiet inner knowing. I serve as a vessel, interpreter and bridge. The expression may change because every being, and every moment, is different.
The Path I Walk
My spirit name is White Buffalo Medicine Woman.
The work that moves through me has been described through many names: Shaman, Medicine Woman, Peacekeeper, Divine Conduit, Spirit Talker, Soul Guide, Energy Healer, Medium, Psychic, Animal Communicator and Healer, Sound Healer, Yoga Instructor and Card Reader, among others.
These names can help place language around the work, but they can never fully describe it. They are not boxes I ask anyone to choose from. They are simply some of the ways this work has expressed itself through me.
There are things that can be learned in classrooms and books, and there are things that can only be understood by living them. My deepest understanding has come through walking my own imperfect and sometimes messy path.
The Way I Walk Beside Others
I do not believe in gurus, hierarchy or positioning myself above another person.
My role is not to fix you, rescue you or take responsibility for your journey. It is to create a sacred container, listen deeply and offer what comes through. I may help you recognize patterns, reconnect with parts of yourself or remember the Divine power that has always lived within you.
This is not power over anyone else. It is not ego power. It is the power of remembering your sacredness, your capacity to choose and the unique beauty of who you are.
The two foundations beneath everything I do are consent and safety.
You remain in control of your healing, your choices and your timing. I will walk beside you, offer guidance and help plant seeds for as long as the path continues to resonate for both of us.
I do not offer perfection. I offer honesty, presence, lived understanding and a willingness to meet you where you are while continuing to do my own work too.
Why Finding Feathers?
A feather is something you find, not something you chase.
It arrives quietly. It asks you to pause. It invites you to notice something you might otherwise have walked past.
For me, feathers have always felt like gifts and reminders from the Universe: reminders that we are not alone, that guidance and support are present and that the natural world is in constant conversation with us when we become quiet enough to listen.
The name Finding Feathers came from the experience of discovering something meaningful within an ordinary moment, and being gently reminded that we are each walking our own path.
Sometimes what we are looking for is not something we need to chase. Sometimes we need to become quiet enough to notice what has been placed along our path and remember what has always lived within us.
Divine love. Divine support. Divine power.
An Invitation
You do not need to have everything figured out before beginning.
If my story, my way of working or the energy of Finding Feathers resonates with you, you are welcome to begin exactly where you are.
There is no prescribed timeline and no requirement to continue walking together. Your journey remains your own. I will meet you where you are and walk alongside you for as long as the path continues to resonate for both of us.
I am not the source. I am the conduit and bridge.
